Education
Keeping in view the significant importance of education in uplifting a society, we have been successfully running the Ibtida School since 2014. Another impactful project called IRTIQA was launched in 2018 in collaboration with Nayee Subha Foundation a NGO working for the cause of Education especially in government schools. This is a Mobile Computer Lab Project, which provides basic computer skills/ education to govt. schools who do not have access to computer labs / education. Since its take off in August 2018 a total number of 350 students have completed the certification.
Environment
On the environment front we are making sincere efforts to create a clean and sustainable future. 700 plants were planted this year in schools, the port area and within our terminal. This is an ongoing project. A Solar energy project was installed at our School Ibtida.
The school is now completely fueled by these solar panels. To further reduce our Carbon Footprint, DP World Karachi has successfully installed 152.96 KW solar panels in April 2018 due to which we will reduce 93849 KGCO2/ year. Going forward another 32KW installation is in process which will further reduce 19546 KWCO2/ year. The objective of the project is to reduce electricity consumption from grid by using solar as an alternate means for electricity to reduce our carbon footprint.
Awareness programs were run in local schools on "Say no to Plastics" & "Stop Polluting our Oceans". A wave of awareness was floated through all our employees with similar programs as well as reusable cloth shopping bags were distributed to all our employees, whereas the employees children through a summer camp held were invited to share their views on pollution and ways to reduce our plastic use.
In collaboration with WWF, we have started to have all the office waste paper recycled. This year we have had approx. 80290 kgs of paper recycled.
Supporting Communities through Volunteering
Our employees are equally committed to our Sustainability vision. Each employee endeavors to volunteer at a cause of their choice. During the Global Volunteer Week celebrated globally by DP World terminals, at DP World Karachi 213 employees volunteered contributing about 900 volunteering hours. Our volunteers have participated in Beach Clean-up, Plantation Drives held at the port area and at 4 schools, Blood Donation Drives, Mentoring students, delivering awareness programs in local schools on "Stop polluting our Oceans" & "Say no to Plastic" is catching serious momentum and we are endeavoring to keep this pace going for many more years to come.
